Men's Behaviour Change

Reflection Choices Responsibility

SalvoCare Eastern's Men’s Behaviour Change is a group program for men who have been abusive or violent in their families. Often this behaviour is reflected in the workplace or community.

Family Violence is never acceptable or excusable and some forms of violence are illegal. The use of violence is a choice for which each man is responsible. Although a man might have been socialised to believe he has a right to control women and children, he can still choose to take responsibility to learn and use non-violent ways of relating.

Some common misconceptions

  • It’s because he drinks
  • She drives him to it/she asks for it
  • He has a stressful job
  • He had a difficult/violent upbringing
  • He’s mentally ill
  • It’s a relationship issue
  • Women in violent relationships are predisposed to accepting violent behaviour
  • It mainly happens in working class families
  • It’s a private matter between the couple and no one should interfere

Men are offered an assessment to determine their needs, readiness to change and suitability for the group program.

Men are invited to explore how they use violent and controlling behaviour and what effect this behaviour has on others.

The support and education program assists men:

  • Recognise the effects of their violence and controlling behaviour on others
  • Develop non-abusive, respectful behaviours and attitudes
  • Learn new skills and to practise them and integrate them into their lives
  • Establish clear boundaries about what attitudes and behaviours are acceptable
  • Consolidate and maintain changes
  • To advocate against men’s use of violent and controlling behaviours and challenge social contexts and conditioning

The Men’s Behaviour Change program is offered across South Gippsland and Bass Coast Shires.

The program is based on national and state-wide standards for men’s behaviour change programs.
