Strengthening the Unit Pricing Code - Australian Government, The Treasury - September 2025

In September 2025 The Commonwealth Treasury conducted a consultation on proposals to strengthen the Unit Pricing Code.

The Salvation Army has found that unit pricing of foods in supermarkets is a highly effective tool for helping community members make informed decisions and maximise the value they get for their money.

Our Submission supports the expansion and enhancement of the code to make it easier to utilise and more widely used. We were also pleased to see the consideration of shrinkflation, where packaging and quantity of goods declines, but the price remains the same.

The critical consideration of The Salvation Army is the application of the code to things such as community pantries and food banks, which we recommended the Treasury consider providing advice.
