Saving money on back-to-school costs

The new school year is upon us. While we all want kids to excel, the cost of equipping them with their school essentials can add stress to the household budget, especially right after Christmas and the school holidays.

The Salvos Moneycare team has put together some simple tips and tricks to help parents save on school expenses, while ensuring your child has what they need to succeed. For convenience, the tips have been divided into relevant topic areas — uniforms, stationery/supplies, lunches, general must-dos, how to involve your children in the process, and the different forms of support that are available.

Saving on school uniforms

  • Buy uniforms one or two sizes bigger for your child. That way, they can grow into it, and you won’t need to buy uniforms too often.
  • Second-hand uniforms are cheaper than new ones, and often in good nick. Look out for stores or parent groups near you or online to grab a bargain.
  • Where possible, buy durable shoes as they’ll last longer, while also saving money in the long run.

Budgeting for school stationery and supplies

  • Reuse stationery and supplies that you already have at home instead of buying new.
  • Make a list of all the items you need before you start shopping. This will help you avoid unnecessary impulse buys.
  • Invest in a quality school bag and pencil case that your child can use for a long time.
  • Check op shops and charity stores for novels and books on the English reading lists.
  • Always compare prices and check the unit price of items. It may be cheaper to buy certain items in bulk.
  • Look out for sales and deals, particularly on computers and electronics which will likely be the most expensive school purchases.
  • It’s also wise to ask other families at the school where they’re buying from, you may get some helpful insights.

Cost-effective school lunch ideas

  • Leftovers from dinner can make for good school lunches the next day.
  • Prepare school lunches in bulk and freeze them, to save time and money.
  • Shop at discount stores in your area.

Must-do checklist

  • Label all your child’s belongings, so they’re more likely to be returned if lost.
  • Look out for discounts and deals on items and shop around at different stores. Don’t forget to ask for a price match if available.
  • If you can, set some money aside for surprise costs that may emerge throughout the year, such as excursions and fundraisers.

Involve your children

If your child is old enough, involve them in the planning process — discuss with them the supplies they’ll most need, the lunches they’d most like to see in their bag, and the extracurricular activities they’re most interested in. This allows you to not only save on back-to-school expenses but also ensures it is in line with your child’s interests. What’s better, having these positive money conversations with your child may equip them with valuable financial knowledge that they can carry and use well into adulthood.

Seek assistance if you need

Your child’s school itself may assist you with saving on school costs, they’re a great place to start.

There are also various national, state or territory-based government programs aimed at helping families meet their schooling costs. Visit MyGov and MoneySmart to find out more and see if you’re eligible. It’s worth checking your state/territory government website for information on schooling support too.
