Five cool ways to enjoy summer school holidays on a budget

The summer holidays are here! A time to relax and soak up the beautiful weather, summer can also mean increased financial pressures for many families. If you have kids, and are wondering how to keep them entertained over the next few weeks without spending a fortune, the Moneycare team is here to help.

We’ve put together some practical tips — tried and tested plus new ones — to help you navigate the summer holidays while keeping costs low and the fun high.

Plan ahead

Make a rough plan of what the kids would like to do, when you’re able to do it, and how much to spend. This will stop you from feeling stuck for choices, and having some spending limits will keep you from blowing your budget.

It’s also worth checking the weather forecast ahead of time — so you can avoid scheduling strenuous activities on hot days or outdoor activities on rainy ones.
How do you like to plan ahead and ensure success?

Find free or cheap activities to beat summer heat

Do you live near a beach or lake? Heading there can be a budget-friendly way to keep the kids cool and entertained. You can also arrange to visit a loved one’s pool or let the kids have a fun-filled water fight with their friends.

Another option is to take them to air-conditioned spaces like libraries, art galleries and museums — not only will your kids be cool and out of the sun, but they’ll also get a dose of culture! Some museums and galleries offer seasonal discounts and even free entry for children.

Enjoyable community activities

Local councils across Australia offer a variety of fun school holiday activities during the summer. Activities coming up this summer include everything from skateboarding (Onkaparinga, South Australia) to flower growing (Mornington Peninsula, Victoria).

Check your local council websites and noticeboards to see what’s available. Note: Bookings may be required in some cases!

Make food fun

Prioritise cooking at home instead of getting takeaway or going to restaurants. Similarly, when you go on outings, try to bring your own food instead of purchasing it. Home cooking isn’t only less expensive, it’s a great way to get the kids involved! Think about what they like to eat and pick dishes that will be fun to make as a family.

Enjoy nature

It costs nothing to enjoy the beauty of Australian nature — and summer is an ideal time to do it! Plan a camping trip, head to the coast, or hike a child-friendly trail. If you prefer staying closer to home, check out your nearest park or even camp out in your backyard.

For those in Australia’s Tropical North, the summer wet season is a great opportunity to visit gushing waterfalls and lush rainforests — but check local road and weather conditions first.

With a bit of prep and oodles of creativity, you’re all set to spend a summer full of joy and savings. Happy holidays!
