More older Australians than ever are struggling alone in pain, indignity and fear…
After working hard her whole life, and giving so much, Iris ended up homeless and couch surfing...
...she was 78 years old.
The lease on her tiny, one-bedroom unit ended right in the middle of winter. And she wasn't given the chance to renew.
"I had no money. I had nowhere to go. I ended up going to live with my sister-in-law and her partner, sleeping on their couch. We were like sardines. I knew I couldn't stay there."
Fear and anxiety began to overwhelm Iris, and her health suffered badly. Because of the current housing crisis in Australia, any unit that became available for rent was well out of her price range.
All too easily, 78-year-old Iris could end up sleeping in a woman’s shelter, or on the cold, hard streets.
Thankfully, Iris thought of the Salvos and decided to ask for help.
From that moment on, Iris was no longer alone. Because of a kind, caring person like you, the Salvos have drawn alongside Iris and given her the support she needs.
Iris has received emergency financial assistance to help with food, medical costs and doctor visits.
And best of all, the Salvos were able to find her a forever home.
"The Salvos saved me. Having a home feels like a weight off my shoulders because I'm not young. It feels so good."
This is the wonderful, heart-warming outcome you can make possible for another struggling older Australian today.
As you can imagine, being homeless is especially difficult for someone who is older. And during winter, it can be downright dangerous.
