Learn to drive

A learner driver learning to drive

If you are you aged between 16 to 25 years of age and live in New South Wales or Queensland*, our ‘Drive for Life’ training and mentoring program can help you obtain your driver’s licence. It’s a program for young people who are currently accessing Centrelink assistance and are looking for a job and/or are willing to enrol in training.

If you are experiencing or have previously experienced:

  • difficulty finding someone to help you learn to drive
  • difficulty finding a vehicle to learn in
  • long term unemployment
  • numeracy/literacy challenges
  • mental health illness
  • physical disabilities

then this program can help! Learning to drive is a life skill that can improve employment opportunities and independence.

If you are in Victoria and under 21 years of age, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) funded L2P learner driver mentor program is available. See more details below.

NSW

Drive for Life

'Drive for Life' is a learn-to-drive program with a difference. You will have access to supervised driving instruction, mentoring and the support of positive role models. You will receive professional driving lessons in a safe, maintained and insured vehicle. Also included in the program are road safety sessions and help to complete your log book hours.

How 'Drive for Life' works

We will team you up with one of our friendly volunteers to help you get your licence, learn valuable life skills and achieve your goals.

Step 1 Take pre-learner classes to help you get your L’s.

Step 2 Have lessons with a licensed driving instructor to get you started.

Step 3 Once you are confident on the road with the driving instructor, a volunteersupervisor will help you with the remaining hours needed.

Step 4 A driving instructor pre-tests you to check if you are ready to go for yourdriving test.

Step 5 Your instructor accompanies you to your test. The rest is up to you!

L2P learner driver mentor program

The TAC funded VicRoads L2P learner driver mentor program assists learners under 21 years of age, without access to a supervising driver or vehicle, to gain the 120 hours of driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.

You are matched with fully licensed volunteer mentors, and use a sponsored vehicle to gain supervised driving experience.
