In 2009, The Salvation Army first opened Streetlevel, with a vision to create a safe and open community for those living rough. Since its early days in Spring Hill, it was moved to a larger building in the Valley and was moved here to Spring Hill again, in August 2015. Our aim here at Streetlevel is to provide emergency support to people in the community.
Brisbane Streetlevel Mission aims to provide a safe and supportive community for people. We offer assistance to those in crisis with emergency relief, free meals, referrals and heaps of emotional and personal support.
We help people stabilise and transition into the next phase of their life by including and accepting them consistently into community life. We help people find a sense of purpose by empowering them to find ways to use their gifts and talents in serving others. We have lots of activities and people who are positive and encouraging.
Why do we do these things at Streetlevel? Building people up, to what end? The answer is beautiful in its simplicity. The ultimate “end goal”, the “aim” is raising people up through the glory of God. A sentiment that is echoed, not only from every volunteer and worker, but every dinner and event organised. To some, it may sound overly religious, but in truth, it follows the basic human principles that we should all endeavour to live by. But as The Salvation Army, is at its core, is a Christian organisation, let’s not overlook that their core mission is to help provide hope, opportunity and freedom to all without discrimination.
After all, 1 John, 4:7-12 says God is love. “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love… No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”
By loving, caring, and encouraging, we bring ourselves and others, closer to God, closer to happiness, and closer to acceptance of themselves and all things.
Streetlevel gives people a sense of family, love and belonging and encourage people who want to change and grow discovering the life transforming love and power of Jesus along the way. You can go places and be involved in things, that in your own life, you may not be able to experience. It starts physically at Streetlevel with Pool competitions and Dim Sim eating contests, and takes you on trips. Things like camping, fishing, making friends, being supported, and adventure weekends are just some of the things that The Salvation Army through Streetlevel make possible for anyone who wants to get involved.
Transformation can happen, and here at Streetlevel it does. If you ask any of the people here they will all agree. Each has their own story of how being here, finding God, and building a community where people can feel valued, loved, and truly belong has changed their lives.
