Students are introduced to the work of The Salvation Army in Australia and are inspired to recognise their own social justice impact.

Primary: Year 5–6

This workshop introduces The Salvation Army’s work and our mission to address many of the injustices that face Australians today.

This workshop explores the issues of homelessness, poverty and inequality, and climate change. It provides an opportunity to understand these issues in an Australian context and students learn how The Salvation Army is addressing these challenges on a local level. This workshop may be well-suited to broader learning enquiries about United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.  

Learning outcomes

  • Students come to understand the ways that The Salvation Army provides support to people experiencing hardship 
  • Students are introduced to the work of The Salvation Army in Australia 
  • Students can discuss issues of homelessness and financial hardship through an empathetic and informed lens 
  • Students understand their social impact as young people, and the idea that one person can make a difference 
  • Students know where to seek support for themselves and others experiencing hardship

Recently — a young person asked us for money — my daughter asked if she would like us to buy her a sandwich and drink. Although I’ve seen my daughter show empathy before, I hadn't seen her display an understanding of how to support someone in need.
