The Port Augusta Youth Bus (Youth Safe Transport Service) hosted a series of scooter riding workshops along with a full day scooter and bike rider competition at Port Augusta's 'the Wave' Skate Park.

Queensland based pro rider Jaidyn Gowley provided some much needed encouragement and mentoring over the 4 day event to local riders including those who were beginning and those who have been riding for some time. Saturday’s competition showcased Jaidyn’s riding abilities on both the scooter and bike throughout the day and culminated in an excellent display of local talent with over 30 participants registered to ride and compete.

Competitors from each age group were competing for both recognition as the better rider within their age group as well as some excellent prizes including helmets, stickers, clothing and a new scooter, donated by local businesses who supported the event. The best trick trophy was won by local rider Brock Abbott.

The event however wasn’t solely about great riding with the aim also to bring young people and their families together promoting involvement in sport, a community atmosphere, opportunities for Jaidyn and Youth Bus staff to mentor young people and to promote a responsibility on local riders and youth to look after the skate park as a much needed space for young people to meet and have fun.

With over 100 people in attendance on the Saturday the event was viewed as successfully achieving its goals and concluded with a free community BBQ prepared by staff and volunteers from The Salvation Army Port Augusta.
