Generic Homelessness Service

We have been providing homelessness support to the Port Augusta community for over 30 years. 

The Generic Homelessness Service (GHS) helps individuals and families at risk of homelessness. Using a supportive accommodation model, it works to prevent homelessness or reduce the time people spend without stable housing.

The service aims to support people in achieving greater independence by resolving crises, reconnecting with family, and building the skills needed to live without ongoing specialist support. 

Crisis intervention and outreach

Support is available for individuals and families at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness. When you contact the Generic Homelessness Service, you’ll have an initial intake appointment to share your story. We will consider your circumstances and provide advice and information about the support available, which may include:

• Advice, information and advocacy
• Emergency accommodation
• Support to apply for public, private or community housing
• Support to establish a pathway into housing (case planning)
• Support to address barriers to your entry into housing

Intensive tenancy support 

This service helps individuals and families whose tenancies are at risk and who have been referred to the Generic Homelessness Service. You are provided practical, hands-on assistance to connect you with information, support and resources to help you sustain your tenancy independently. You will work with a case manager to identify risks, discuss current and ongoing needs and develop a case plan to stabilise and secure the tenancy. 

Transitional housing program 

Through its transitional housing program, the Generic Homelessness Service supports people to enter or return to housing with a short to medium-term lease in one of 13 available properties. A case manager provides guidance and support throughout the lease. 

After being allocated a property, you work with a case manager to identify barriers to accessing other housing options. During your time in transitional housing, you are supported to address these barriers while continuing to explore private, public, and community housing. Where appropriate, pathways to home ownership may also be considered.  

Supportive housing program

This program provides a longer-term platform to help people facing significant barriers entering (or re-entering) housing to progress toward independent living. 

The Generic Homelessness Service is the preferred support provider for five properties in Port Augusta, each starting with a 12-month lease. As tenants, you receive case management and support to address more complex challenges to housing stability. 

Vacancies are advertised within the sector, and applications can be submitted by any agency or organisation on behalf of the tenant. A panel considers each application and communicates the outcome promptly. The Generic Homelessness Service then assists the tenant to prepare for allocation into the property.
