The Salvation Army to appear before a public hearing of the The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse

Published on
6 December 2013

The Salvation Army Australia Eastern Territory is preparing to report to the Royal Commission in a public hearing which will commence on 28 January 2014.

The Royal Commission public hearing will inquire into the responses of The Salvation Army Australia Eastern Territory to child sexual abuse within its children’s homes at:

  • Alkira Salvation Army Home for Boys, Indooroopilly, QLD;
  • Riverview Training Farm (known as Endeavour Training Farm), Riverview, QLD;
  • Bexley Boys’ Home, Bexley, NSW; and
  • Gill Memorial Home, Goulburn, NSW.

There are accounts of young lives ruined by abuse which have to be heard. The Salvation Army is taking a hard look at why we sometimes failed so badly. The Salvation Army is committed to doing the right thing by men and women who were harmed in past years while children in the Army’s care.

The Army is also committed to providing the safest possible environment today for children under our care, and to that end we will continue to fully cooperate with the Commission.

We anticipate receiving the Commission’s recommendations in due course.
