Royal Commission Information
Between 1890 and the 1990s The Salvation Army in Australia cared for over 35,000 children who, for many and varied reasons beyond their control, were unable to be cared for by their families.
The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse commenced proceedings in January 2014 with the intention of investigating abuse of children in Australian institutions such as schools, churches, sports clubs and government organisations.
The Salvation Army Australia Eastern Territory has previously appeared before the Commission in Case Study 5 and Case Study 10.
A public hearing commencing for Case Study 33 was held in October 2015 which investigated the experiences of former child residents at institutions operated by The Salvation Army Australia Southern Territory in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia between 1940 and 1990.
