The Salvation Army will today launch its annual Red Shield Appeal in Sydney, and with an aim to raise $79 million nationally, The Salvation Army will again look to the Australian community and business sector for support.

As one of the key events leading up to The Salvation Army’s annual Red Shield Appeal doorknock weekend on 25-26 May, today’s luncheon at The Westin Sydney is sponsored by Jones Lang La Salle and is expected to be attended by over 500 Sydney business leaders. Coca-Cola Amatil’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Sally Loane, will conduct an interview with Fortescue Metals Group Chairman, Andrew Forrest and his wife Nicola Forrest, CEO of the Australian Children’s Trust.

Mr Forrest says he is honoured to be part of today’s launch and to support the good work of The Salvation Army.

“The Salvation Army plays such a critical role in our communities,” said Mr Forrest.

“I feel very privileged to be here with my wife Nicola to launch this year’s Red Shield Appeal – an appeal which I encourage all Australians to get behind.”

The event will also feature 2009 Australian Idol winner and Red Shield Appeal ambassador, Stan Walker, who will perform his new single ‘Take It Easy’.

Salvation Army spokesperson, Major Bruce Harmer, says it is vital The Salvation Army reach its national fundraising target so it can continue to assist those in need.

“For some people on low incomes or government benefits, once they pay the rent they can have as little as $50 a week to live on,” says Major Harmer. “It doesn’t matter how frugal you are, or how good at budgeting – the money left after the rent is paid is simply not enough to cover a family’s basic needs.”
