The Governor-General was introduced to Salvation Army staff at SalvoConnect Women’s Services in Geelong before sharing lunch with staff, current clients, Divisional Leader Major Debra Stevens and SalvoConnect Network Director Lorrinda Hamilton.

The Governor-General spent time with clients as they shared their individual stories with her. Both staff and clients appreciated the opportunity to discuss the issues of homelessness and family and domestic violence with Ms Bryce.

SalvoConnect Network Director Lorrinda Hamilton said that the Governor-General’s visit on White Ribbon Day will help to raise awareness of family violence as a major national social problem.

“Women and children are the most likely to be victims of family violence and suffer the most significant psychological, physical, social and financial harms as a result,” she said.

“It’s women and children escaping family violence that represent the majority of those seeking assistance from homelessness services.

“We’re thrilled that the Governor-General visited us and most importantly, that she took the time to talk with the women receiving care at The Salvation Army,” said Ms Hamilton.

The Salvation Army is one of the largest providers of family violence support services in Australia. In 2013 The Salvation Army Australia Southern Territory helped more than 6000 people through domestic and family violence issues.
