The Salvation Army in Wagga Wagga, south-west NSW, has acquired a much-anticipated new food truck to expand outreach to people experiencing hardship and homelessness in the area.

After starting as an evening street service, where food was served from the back of a van, the new food truck allows hot food to be cooked on-site, while also giving the Salvos more opportunities to engage with the community and provide support.

"We have already taken it to the homelessness expo,” said Val Hopewell, Wagga Wagga Corps Officer, “and we are training up team leaders from our local Salvos Store, the Rural Schools Ministry, and our Street Mission Team, so that they can have their own teams, and the truck can be used for a range of purposes."

In a playful nod to the beginnings of The Salvation Army, the menu served from the truck includes a ‘Bill Booth Burger’ and a ‘Cath’s Bethnal Green Tavern Hot Dog’, named after William and Catherine Booth, co-founders of the movement.

Soon after the Salvos took possession of the van, a special ‘thank-you’ ceremony was held at the Sunday worship service for the local organisations that had contributed to fundraising efforts for the truck. Members of South Wagga Rotary, Wollundry Rotary and Carevan Wagga Inc. attended the service and enjoyed lunch from the truck afterwards.

Now that’s some good food for a great cause!
