The Salvation Army says the state government’s decision to go beyond its initial COVID response for people experiencing homelessness gives renewed certainty for thousands of vulnerable Victorians.

The $150 million 'From Homeless to a Home' initiative provides much-needed investment that will assist the Salvos and other organisations working to break the systemic cycle of homelessness.

The Salvation Army’s Head of Social Mission, Major Jenny Begent says “The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in a unique situation for all Victorians, including the homeless, and it will continue to be an issue for many months to come.

“The ability to extend the current hotel response will enable The Salvation Army to ensure homeless people have a roof over their heads and receive the support they need during this crisis.

“Ongoing support, at all levels, is essential to ensure that these Victorians don’t return to homelessness.”

The government’s flexible support packages and the Private Rental Assistance Program (PRAP), as well as additional leased private market properties, will assist The Salvation Army to ensure our clients receive the right support; including counselling, mental health support and assistance with day-to-day living.

Since March, The Salvation Army has assisted 3,731 clients with housing establishment funding, including emergency accommodation, and 615 clients with private rental support.

These are people who have experienced homelessness or are at risk of homelessness across suburban Melbourne and regional Victoria.
