Indigenous Voice Co-design Interim Report Community Consultation

Published on
30 April 2021

In 2021 the National Indigenous Australians Agency asked for input to further develop and refine the proposals set out in the Indigenous Voice Co-design Interim Report. This public consultation is the second stage of the Indigenous Voice co-design process, and the recommendations will inform the Australian Government’s pathway forward on constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians and an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

The Salvation Army’s submission builds on our Reconciliation Action Plan and Black Lives Matter statement .

Our submission reiterates our longstanding position that an Indigenous Voice to Parliament must be enshrined in the Constitution. This is the only way to ensure that Indigenous Australians have a fair say on issues that affect their families and communities through contributing to the design of legislation, policies, services and programs. A diverse Voice, representing regions across Australia and First Nations peoples from a range of backgrounds, is also the best way to work toward Closing the Gap and overcoming the inequality experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Salvation Army acknowledges the work of Elders and advocates over a very long time. Our submission seeks to amplify their voices and the message coming from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations – especially the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

You can find out more about the consultation and co-design process of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament at the Indigenous Voice webpage.
