In Isaiah 61: 1-2 the servant of the Lord is anointed by God, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and to release the prisoners from darkness.

Jesus takes these verses as his own in Luke 4: 18-21. His mandate, based on Isaiah 61, is slightly different: to proclaim the good news to the poor, freedom for the captives, recovery of sight for the blind and to set the oppressed free, proclaiming that now is the year of the Lord’s favour.

Taking both these passages of Scripture, the mission for 2014 and beyond for Woden Valley Salvation Army is:

  • To be a place of healing for the broken-hearted, healing the hurts of the soul;
  • To see those held captive by addiction, bitterness, unforgiveness and the consequences of  past experiences set free;
  • To bring sight to those who are spiritually blind, living in the darkness of doubt, unbelief and confusion; and above all
  • To live freely in the knowledge that the kingdom of heaven is near, that Jesus’ reign on earth is a reality.

To work this out practically means that Woden Valley Salvation Army:

  • Will be a warm accepting place where people will endeavour to love others, with all their faults and failings;
  • Where the Word of God will be preached faithfully and powerfully, so that the body of Christ will be built up and equipped for the works prepared for all its members to do; and
  • Where there will be sense of expectancy that God will reign and rule in the lives of all who come, seeing the freedom that was won on the Cross by our Lord Jesus Christ become a reality.
