The Salvation Army Breakfast Club
For over 10 years our corps has been running a weekday breakfast for the homeless and socially isolated in Katoomba. This has been staffed by a wonderful group of volunteers who provide about 5,000 breakfast meals a year. We are always seeking volunteers to help us, are you interested?
We have in previous years tried to provide other meals at different times during the day or week; but the breakfast meal has always been the most popular.
Here are some statistics that help us understand how important this ministry is to our community.
We average about 18 breakfast meals per day.
52% of the people who come to breakfast are either homeless or in crisis accommodation when they come.
For 77% of the people who come to breakfast this will be the only cooked meal they will have that day.
46% of those attending are on a disability support pension.
51% of those attending come to breakfast 3 or more times a week.
For the last three years the Breakfast Club has been solely supported by donations from wills and bequests. In early 2011 we recieved substantial donations from the Bendigo Community Bank of Katoomba and Medicare Australia to fund our work until July 2012
