Reflection: Seeing where God is

Many Christians have found a practice called the ‘examen’ helpful in their relationship with God. It is a time of prayerful reflection that brings into my conscious mind my experience of God over the past day. We can attend to God throughout the day, and we can then reflect on the day.

I can reflect on:

• those times when I was aware of God’s presence with me
• how I responded to that awareness
• those times when I was not aware of God’s presence
• whether I am doing things that block my awareness of God
• what I am thankful to God for
• what I need to confess to God
• what I need to ask for help with

There are a multitude of ways to process this reflection:

• in my thoughts
• with someone else
• in a journal
• in drawings and art
• in poetry or writing the words of a song
