Small wins and self-talk

Published on

Most money advice talks about big goals, but it's just as important to celebrate the daily victories. When we stop to notice the small wins, we also build our positive self-talk.

What is one small win you had with your money recently?

It doesn't have to be big at all. Maybe you:

  • Found a way to stretch a meal to last another night
  • Said 'no' to an extra expense even when it was hard
  • Found a cheaper alternative for something you needed
  • Paid a bill on time
  • Had a look at your recent bank statements

Sometimes just making it through the week takes a lot of skill and strength.

The stories you tell yourself can shape your life. Many people tell themselves they’re bad with money or they find money stressful, but what if you started to acknowledge what you’re doing well with money?

The conversation you have with yourself can be positive like: “This looks tricky but I’m a good problem solver and I know how to get support.” Or negative, like: “I’m hopeless with money.”

So go on, list three things you do well in your money life.

After looking at your list, you might identify one area you’d like to improve in your money life too. A financial counsellor can support you.
