Generous Culture 

A Generous culture is about creating a culture of generosity and biblical stewardship in our faith communities. Stewardship, generosity and giving are broad Christian themes.  

The focus of the Generous Culture team is on financial discipleship. Jesus warned that how we steward money and possessions reveals how serious we are about trusting God as our provider. In our materialistic, consumer-oriented world, this is a discipleship priority today. 

The challenge for spiritual leaders is knowing how to confidently disciple Jesus-followers to manage their finances God’s way.  Our purpose is to help people find financial freedom on their disciple journey.  This is a mark of spiritual maturity which results in joy and contentment for those who choose to live life with a spirit of generosity. 

Journey to Generosity 

We see six possible ways for the Generous Culture Team to support your TSA faith community's development of a culture of generosity: 

  1. COACHING: The Generous Culture Specialist (GCS) coaches the senior leader/s of the corps to engage, affirm and embrace their God-given responsibility to lead their people on a journey to generosity. The coach will provide access to a range of resources to encourage self-directed learning. This may take several sessions. 
  2. INFLUENCING: Guided by the GCS, the faith community leader/s will seek local leadership team buy-in to the generosity journey through personal testimony, biblical teaching, and vision casting. Local leaders will be asked to commit to a personal journey of discovery and growth using devotional and training resources in preparation for the next stage of engagement.  This may take from one to six months. 
  3. PLANNING: The GCS works with the Corp's leader/s to develop a ‘Financial Discipleship Plan’ appropriate for their community. The plan is a strategy and tactics for building a culture of generosity based on Biblical stewardship and generosity principles.  This plan may include discipling people in how to manage their money God’s way. 
  4. LAUNCHING: Supported by the GCS, the corps leader/s introduce the Journey to Generosity concept to the wider corps community. This may involve a launch event as an invitation for all disciples in the community to embark on a personal whole-life journey of Jesus-centred generosity. 
  5. IMPLEMENTING: In consultation with the GCS, the corps leader/s implement the Financial Discipleship Plan to inspire personal spiritual growth and provide practical support to members of the corps in how to manage their finances God's way. The plan must accommodate the varying needs of people in different financial situations and stages of life. 
  6. SUSTAINING: The GCS will assist the corps leader/s and leadership team in establishing a sustainable financial discipleship ministry, ideally led by a suitable member of the leadership team. This ministry will cover both Biblical teaching for spiritual health and practical money management training for financial health. 

The Generosity Journey will look different for each TSA corps community.  It will feed your Local Mission Plan.  Unique local factors such as community demographics, mission focus, leadership capacity, faith pathways and discipleship strategy will influence the emphasis given to each of the above stages of engagement.
