REIWA Sleeping Bag Appeal

Media Release

Local Real Estate Agents provide warmth for the homeless

Through the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia’s Community REInvest Program, local property agents will join forces in June and July to collect warm sleeping bags and blankets for The Salvation Army, and ultimately, those in need.

The Real Estate Institute of Western Australia’s Community REInvest Program is a philanthropic initiative designed to help agents and property managers support The Salvation Army with both financial and material aid in Western Australia.

The Salvation Army’s latest Economic and Social Impact Survey* has revealed staggering results on how people are entrenched in poverty across Australia, and suffer more than ever in the winter months. Key statistics to come out of the 2015 nationwide survey are:

  • 57% have gone without meals
  • 13% of respondents had no stable accommodation
  • 67% of respondents experienced extreme housing stress, paying more than 50% of their income for accommodation
  • 75% of respondents indicated they had cut down on basic necessities

Warren Palmer, Public Relations Secretary at The Salvation Army said that the collection was a valued initiative that supports the work of The Salvation Army “The latest survey gives us a brief snapshot of the harsh realities many Western Australians are facing every day. We are seeing more and more families struggling, and the sleeping bag appeal is a great tangible way to provide support for those in need”
he said.

Real Estate Institute of Western Australia President and Chair of The Salvation Army’s Advisory Board David Airey said that all members were involved in community groups one way or another and that the work of The Salvation Army was widely respected.

“Our members see the Community REInvest Program as a way of giving back to the community through a profession that is very closely involved in people’s lives and personal situations,” he said.
