Leadership & Management

The Salvation Army Southern Territory currently has two programs targeting officers and employees in the area of management and leadership development. Both programs are built around the attributes and competencies within The Salvation Army Capability Framework.

The first, LaMP, is the Leadership and Management Program. The purpose of this program is to support frontline and middle-level managers/officers in the Salvation Army with relevant and targeted activities and initiatives that will develop and build upon their current capability. Some aspects will also target more senior managers. Information about LaMP can be found by clicking on the link here.

The second, TRANSFORM, is the Transformational Leadership Program. This program is designed to strengthen the leadership capability of senior officers, managers and leaders in The Salvation Army, who already demonstrate strong leadership capabilities and have potential to be considered for senior/executive positions in the future. Information about TRANSFORM can be found on the TRANSFORM link here.

For any needs or queries in relation to leadership and management development, please contact Janelle Murley in the School for Learning & Development via email or on 03 9847 5425.

Development Options Guide

The Development Options Guide has been developed by the School for Learning & Development as an essential tool to aid the professional development of managers at The Salvation Army.

The Guide offers practical assistance by:

  • listing the capabilities which are important for effective performance for managers
  • providing a list of indicators to describe those capabilities in terms of expected behaviours
  • providing a range of development options from which to select activities that best meet the development need and the learner’s preferred way of learning
  • being a valuable resource during development planning discussions as part of the annual performance appraisal process

This Guide is a companion to the TSA Capability Framework, which identifies the capabilities required of officers, staff and volunteers at TSA.

Personal Development Planning

Self-paced video and workbook package

The Personal Development Planning self-paced video and workbook package is a training module that is designed to provide employees, officers and volunteers with the information and resources to be able to prepare an effective personal development plan.

The package consists of four separate video clips, as well as a workbook that is designed to guide you through the clips and enable you to apply what you learn through a series of learning activities.

To complete the module, download the workbook and follow the instructions. There are two versions of the workbook; one for those who are completing this module as part of the Leadership and Management Program (LaMP), and one for general use. Please use the general version unless you are undertaking the LaMP.

The video clips are accessed via YouTube. If you require alternate options for viewing the clips, please contact Janelle Murley in the School for Learning & Development via email or on 03 8878 2447.

Learning Styles

Learning styles are models that identify the different ways that people learn. Most people learn in a variety of ways, although some may have a more dominant style while others may be comfortable using multiple styles and yet others may find different styles appeal to them in different learning situations.

There is no right or wrong learning style, and you can develop your ability to learn using different styles. Just because you are more comfortable using one style, does not mean that you cannot learn through other methods. However, it can be helpful to at least start your develop planning with an idea of what your preferred style is and ensure that you have a good selection of activities that allow you to use that style.
