Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
The Open Door and Flagstaff Accommodation services
Part – time 60.8hrs a fortnight
(possible extension to full time)
Flagstaff and The Open Door residential facilities are part of the Adult Services Network of The Salvation Army and operate 24 hours/day, 7 days per week. The two sites provide 102 beds in total for men experiencing homelessness who have high needs, complexity or vulnerability.
The Therapeutic Recreation specialist is a new position created as part of our re-designed service model and will operate across the two sites.
The role provides purposeful and careful facilitation of quality therapeutic recreational experiences through the delivery of a program of group and individual activities for clients within The Open Door and Flagstaff. The role works collaboratively and proactively with the Peer Support Specialist, Community support team, Case work team and clients to ensure recreation as therapy is planned and meaningful.
Hours of work
- Monday to Friday – days and span of work hours from 9am to 8pm – to be negotiated
- The position will be remunerated at the SCHCADS Award, Social Stream level 5

A Tertiary qualification in Recreation Therapy, Diversion Therapy or other relevant Tertiary qualification and experience in the social sector; including experience in delivering Therapeutic recreation.
Adult Services provides and values professional development, quality supervision and best practice within the sector. A strong framework of development such as performance plans and reviews, supervision, team meetings, internal and external training opportunities and a study leave policy are provided.
