All it takes is one simple act of kindness
Catherine and Dean were an average, happy Aussie family. While Dean worked steady hours, Catherine stayed home, raising their four children. Although not wealthy, they were good budgeters and felt they had everything they valued in life – a growing family and a home full of love.
Then everything started to unravel.
First, the family had to move house then Dean’s hours were cut at work. But the most devastating blow of all was when Catherine was diagnosed with a rare brain condition.
“There was a day when one doctor told Catherine she would probably die or suffer a severe, debilitating stroke and ‘be left a vegetable’,” says Dean.
Catherine and Dean were worried about how they would afford the medical treatment, let alone pay the mortgage. But most of all, they were terrified of letting their kids down at Christmas.
However, it was just one act of kindness from a friend named Sandra that turned Christmas back into a celebration.
Sandra put the family’s name down for a Salvos Christmas Cheer hamper, which arrived loaded with much-needed food and Christmas presents not just for the kids, but for Catherine and Dean as well.
This simple yet selfless gesture of kindness filled Catherine and Dean’s hearts with hope.
In the weeks following Christmas, Catherine’s treatment was successful and she continues to get stronger each day. And with support from the Salvos, the family is slowly beginning to find their feet again.
Please will you give your help now? You can show people at their lowest times that they're not alone.
