SYDNEY - Development of 9 to 14 year olds

The ages between 9-14 are often known as the missing middle years - children and young people in this age group are not in early childhood; nor are they quite in adolescence but fall into a distinct group. In terms of programs this age group is poorly catered for. This one day course will provide you with the opportunity to focus on designing programs that celebrate and enhance the social, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional challenges and strengths of this age group.

The course will explore:

  • the developmental stages of this age group
  • the context of and importance family, community and culture
  • positive programming
  • effective methods to consult with the 9+ group about what they think of your programs
  • what works with this age group and why
  • ways to ensure and support 9 + participation in decision making
  • engaging families
  • transition to youth and other programs.

Participants will be able to understand needs of 9-14 year olds and design effective programs, and explore policy and funding possibilities for this age group.
