Book Review - Formational Children's ministry

David Goodwin from Kidsreach says Ivy Beckwith is a must read for those in children's ministry, He Writes
"I have just finished reading Ivy Beckwith’s latest book: ‘Formational Children's Ministry’, a book that is a must read for everyone in Kids Ministry.   You will want to give a copy to your minister to read also.

Ivy Beckwith’s first book, published in 2004, Postmodern Children’s Ministry: Ministry to Children in the 21st Century tackled the subject:  How can we help children find faith that will sustain them into adulthood.   For many, it opened up new ideas about what children’s ministry means.  For others it put into writing what has been on the heart of many – that somehow we are not doing Kids Ministry exactly right.

Her latest book that was published in 2010:  Formational Children’s Ministry, builds on her first book by giving some practical answers in her Faith Formation Model that proposes ritual (faith practices), story and relationships are essential ingredients in children’s formation of faith.

Beckwith’s argument will make you ask the question as to what identity children will have with the church when they are put into children’s ministry programs with either no or minimal participation in baptisms, dedications, worship or communion, nor do they have any meaningful relationship with adult members of the church.

Ivy Beckwith challenges everything we do in kids ministry with a great deal of foresight and experience.  If churches took just 10 per cent of what she says and put them into practise, it would revolutionise everything we do in kids ministry.

Maybe you would not agree with everything Ivy does herself because it is very much tied into her own denominational practises.  But I am sure that all of us who have been concerned about where our kids are heading, would agree with everything what she says and make sense of why she says it.
I believe everyone serious about kids ministry should read her books, especially this latest one."

KAREN CONNORS COMMENTS (DYS Comments, ACT Sth NSW)

I want to endorse David's comments and encourage you to read these books. They are excellent for your own personal development and understanding of the trends in thinking around children's ministry and for your leadership teams in both senior and junior corps. Why not read and discuss the issues Ivy Beckwith raises as you wrestle through how ministry to children could and should look in your faith community? I am keen to come and discuss these issues and the possibilities with you, your youth and children's teams and your corps leadership teams. All you need to do is get the books and set a date with me.
There is a possibility that Ivy Beckwith will be in Australia for the 2013 Kidsreach Conference (Saturday 16 February) so put the date in your diary now and make sure you keep it free!
