What We Believe

Doctrines
The teachings of The Salvation Army are solidly ground in Scripture and follow closely the orthodox beliefs of the major Protestant Churches.

The Army's eleven Articles of Faith have, since 1878, been the basis of the Army's witness to the Christian gospel. They stress the importance of recognising our need of God, acknowledging our sinfulness, the life changing consequences of entering into a relationship with Jesus Christ, as well the importance of maintaining our faith on a daily basis.

With a solid Scriptural base, they emphasise that our faith is indeed a belief in God that has been acted upon in a personal way.

The Role of Women
When the Salvos were born in the 1860's, it was unusual for women to speak in public.

Mrs Booth, the wife of the founder of The Salvation Army, decided during one of her husband's many services that she would like to have a word. That night she preached, and she continued to do so whenever she had the chance.

From that time, The Salvation Army have adopted a firm stance on the role of women, which can be briefly summarised as follows:

  • Women have the right to an equal share with men in the work of proclaiming the gospel of salvation.
  • A woman may hold any position of authority or power in the Army.
  • A woman is not to be left back from any position of power or influence merely on account of her gender.
  • Women must be treated as equal with men in all intellectual and social relationships in life.
