PRP Case Study Snapshot

Following a privileged upbringing in Pakistan, Alice came to Australia after an arranged marriage in 2009. They were to live with her husband’s parents and their other five sons in the interim. Within months Alice fell pregnant. Traditionally Pakistani women cook, clean wash and shop for their husband. But Alice had to do this for her husband and his parents and five brothers. Alice tolerated this because she thought it was temporary and they would have their own place.Even though Alice was heavily pregnant her mother in law compelled her to continue doing all of the chores around the house. Her mother in law started to cook for the family but she was not feeding Alice. Alice’s husband became physically abusive and punched Alice when she was unable to do chores. The abuse continued up until their daughter was born, but things became worse as her husband wanted a son.

The brothers would take the baby away from Alice until the chores were completed.

Alice was fearful of her new family and embarrassed to tell her family in Pakistan. But in the end she had no choice. Alice’s mother put money into her bank account and told her to move out of the house immediately. Alice was very scared but contacted Red Cross. A Red Crossworker referred Alice to SASHS IA&P and in turn Alice was referred to the Private Rental Brokerage Program. She attended the PRAP information session. A case plan was initiated outlining her goals.

A suitable property was identified in North Melbourne. Alice signed a 12 month lease. The PRBP assisted with both rent in advance and Bond. Alice was also assisted with basic furniture items and referred to AOF’s 6 week’s program. Alice connected herself with her local Pakistani community and this provided great support to Alice. Alice is engaged with education and training to secure her and her daughters future.
