Gambling involves a person outlaying money on the risk of either losing it or increasing it. Whether the risk involves poker machines, card and game tables, races or lotteries, it is designed to ensure that over a given period of time the franchise wins. The longer a person plays, the greater their chance of a loss. Gambling is extremely volatile, and the extent of losses will vary depending on the particular games played and, most importantly, the time period over which play takes place. Gambling addiction occurs when a player’s inability to manage their behaviour because of irrational perceptions about luck, difficulties limiting levels of expenditure to within their budget, or other troubling motivations, manifest themselves in a tendency toward over-spending and excessive losses.
