National Volunteer Week 2016

May 12

On any given night, Westcare provides support to 170 babies, children and young people in Melbourne’s West.

But who provides this support? Our team of over 60 volunteer foster carers and lead tenants.

To celebrate National Volunteer Week this week, the Westcare team hosted a special morning tea and presentation ceremony for our wonderful volunteers.

For the first time, foster carers, lead tenants and our team of volunteers in the Sunshine Community Garden joined together to celebrate National Volunteer Week. Over cakes, biscuits and coffees, the 50 volunteers mingled and shared stories about their volunteer experience.

Certificate presentations were also made to all volunteers to highlight their tireless work and committment to providing the best outcomes for the children who need it the most.

At Westcare, volunteers play an integral role in a young person's development in care. With a positive role model, children and young people have the support to lead happy, healthy and positive lives.

For Transitional Services manager Ralph Salera, volunteer lead tenants play a crucial role in both preparing and shaping a young person's independent living skills.

“Our Lead Tenants offer an amazing experience to young people who are transitioning to independent living.  There is nothing more real than young people living with members in our community, our volunteer’s offer young people a chance to experience a real shared living environment.”

“This is a different and great way to connect young people to the community and become skilled in managing a home. Our young people often struggle to develop the appropriate life skills, having volunteers residing with them allows young people to really develop in all areas. “

“Becoming a volunteer lead tenant is a unique opportunity to make a real difference in young people's lives.  Being a positive role model in a young person life and watching them grow into interdependence is a rewarding way to make a difference.  An amazing way to offer a life changing experience for yourself and young people.”
