The Assessment and Accrediation Process.

In order to protect the safety of the children and young people receiving our services, Westcare has developed a comprehensive and thorough application, assessment, and accreditation process. This can take up to 6 months to complete.

Once accredited, all Foster Carers can expect to receive continued support and supervision, along with further training. All Foster Carers’ eligibility and suitability to look after children and young people is reviewed yearly.

Attend an Information Session.

Westcare will arrange an Information Session with the members of your household. This can take place at our office or we can come to you! This is your chance to ask questions and raise any concerns.

You’ll receive an Application Pack to get your submission started.

Complete Training.

Our authorised training and assessment staff will take you through Victoria’s Shared Stories, Shared Lives Foster Care training framework. Each module included in this comprehensive training manual ensures you receive the latest evidence-based information on fostering children and young people.

Home Assessment.

Our qualified Assessors will visit your home to complete an Environment Check. They will conduct several interviews in order to assess your suitability as a Foster Carer.

Accrediation.

Once you’ve completed the Home Assessment, a report of your suitability to become a Foster Carer is presented to Westcare’s Accreditation Panel.

Become a Westcare Foster Carer!

If the Accreditation Panel approves your application, you become an accredited Foster Carer! In most cases, this accreditation will be transferrable across Victoria. This means even if you move, you will be able to offer your services through the Foster Care agency operating in your new area.

You will need to sign a Westcare Caregiver Service Agreement and agree to adhere to Westcare’s Foster Care Program policies. Once you’ve successfully completed these steps, you will be ready to be matched with a child or young person in need of your support.
