plus his enthusiasm for visual as well as oral
communication, began his new appointment at The
Salvation Army headquarters in Melbourne.
His concepts were developed to such a scale that in
1892 a new section of The Salvation Army operations was
established and named the Limelight Brigade. It’s
objective was to reach the people with messages of mercy
and salvation. At the same time it became an excellent
vehicle for raising money to support The Salvation Army
social work.
Perry, with his photographic and projection
equipment, set out on extensive tours lecturing and
gathering images of Salvation Army work across Australia
and New Zealand. Within two years, Perry had travelled
30,000 miles and delivered 500 lectures in Salvation
Army halls and other venues.
An accidental fire in New Zealand in 1896 destroyed
Perry’s projection equipment. When he returned to
Melbourne to re-equip he was able to add a magnificent
‘triunial’ lantern to the Limelight Brigade armoury.
