The Red Shield Appeal is our year-round nationwide fundraising appeal to meet the budget needs for the The Salvation Army's many community service programmes. The national fundraising target for 2008 is $68 million.
During the Red Shield Appeal doorknock, 24th May - 1st June, a maximum effort will be made to knock on every door in every town, city and even country areas.
The Red Shield Appeal sets out to ask every potential giver in industry, commerce and in private homes to give to this appeal. Thousands of people depend on the success of the Red Shield Appeal.
How are Red Shield Appeal funds used?
Over 1,000,000 Australians are helped by The Salvation Army every year. In any given week the Salvos provide::
- more than 5,000 beds for the homeless
- more than 100,000 meals for the hungry
- between 5,000 and 8,000 food vouchers
- assistance to more than 500 people addicted to drugs, alcohol or gambling
- refuge to more than 500 victims of abuse
- training and jobs to more than 1,000 people through Employment Plus
- aged care services to around 3,000 elderly people
- chaplain support to more than 1,000 people in courts and prisons
- Family Tracing services which help locate 40 missing family members
