The Salvation Army Court and Prison Services provide counsel, support, representation, rehabilitation and programs for people accessing court, prison and post-referral services.

A Salvation Army court chaplain whose role is to provide pastoral care, spiritual care and support, is attached to most courts.

COURT SERVICES AND SUPPORT

We act as the friend, available to help a client in the court process:

  • listening to the client's concerns
  • explaining the court process
  • provide advice and referral

Representation

We provide limited representation services including:
  • referral to a lawyer
  • listening to a case and providing plea and referral advice
  • making contact with and advising family members and significant others

Rehabilitation

Provide referral for clients to appropriate rehabilitation services both within the Salvation Army and the greater community.

Programs

Provide referral to Salvation Army personal development programs such as:

  • Positive lifestyle
  • Self esteem
  • Anger management
  • subsequent referral to the magistrate

PRISON SERVICES

We act as the friend of the prisoner as well as a supporter of the victims:

  • spend time with their families
  • listen to and reflect upon the needs of the prisoner
  • counsel prisoners
  • represent a prisoners concerns to their families
  • provide support to the families of a prisoner during their sentence
  • provide Christmas cheer for prisoners
  • promote religious and entertainment services in prisons

POST-RELEASE SERVICES

We help with post-release services to those exiting prison:

  • assist prisoners with making applications to the Parole Board
  • assist in the parole process
  • help the prisoner to readjust to society
  • work with employment agencies (such as Employment Plus) to provide work for former prisoners
  • assist with a prisoners representations to the parole board
