As a part of a global network partnering with 109 countries in the world The Salvation Army Australia has a proud record of involvement with projects which have assisted communities in developing countries. Through this global network we have been able to address community needs impacting economic, social and environmental concerns. During 2004- 2005 we have witnessed many successes and achievements through our work in community development.

The Salvation Army Australia in partnership with AusAID is currently implementing a wide range of community development activities in nine countries. We have continued to develop strong partnerships not only with Salvation Army Territories but also other agencies like Bread for All/DEZA Switzerland and various government and community agencies in developing countries. Our global network enables an appropriate response to opportunities by providing solutions which assist in developing community capacity, promoting local ownership and empowerment of people.

We would like to thank AusAID, our fi nancial supporters in the Australian community and members of The Salvation Army Australia who have been prepared to be our partners in providing the resources for this challenging and rewarding work.

There is a new type of slavery in the world – it’s called poverty. Poverty strips people of freedom – freedom to satisfy hunger or to achieve sufficient nutrition, or to obtain remedies for treatable illnesses, or the opportunity to be adequately clothed or sheltered or to enjoy clean water or sanitary facilities.

Poverty hinders access to public facilities such as clinics, hospitals and schools or effective organisations to maintain local peace and order. Poor people do not have the freedom to make their voices heard and their ability to participate in the social, political and economic life of their community is severely limited.

Paraphrased from Amartya Sen, ‘Development as Freedom’ 1999

What is development?

Development is the process by which people’s standard of living, quality of life and capacity to participate in the political, social and economic institutions which influence their dignity and freedom, improve.

Development not only addresses the physical needs of people but also the emotional and spiritual needs of people. This combined impact is often referred to as holistic development. The Salvation Army Australia with its partners mentioned below seeks to achieve sustainable holistic development in all of its community development and poverty alleviation activities.
