There is a new type of slavery in the world – it’s called poverty. Poverty strips people of freedom – freedom to satisfy hunger or to achieve sufficient nutrition, or to obtain remedies for treatable illnesses, or the opportunity to be adequately clothed or sheltered or to enjoy clean water or sanitary facilities.
Poverty hinders access to public facilities such as clinics, hospitals and schools or effective organisations to maintain local peace and order. Poor people do not have the freedom to make their voices heard and their ability to participate in the social, political and economic life of their community is severely limited.
Paraphrased from Amartya Sen, ‘Development as Freedom’ 1999

What is development?
Development is the process by which people’s standard of living, quality of life and capacity to participate in the political, social and economic institutions which influence their dignity and freedom, improve.
Development not only addresses the physical needs of people but also the emotional and spiritual needs of people. This combined impact is often referred to as holistic development. The Salvation Army Australia with its partners mentioned below seeks to achieve sustainable holistic development in all of its community development and poverty alleviation activities.
